[Paper-making]
Paper-making, which is one of the four great inventions of ancient China, has more than 2,000 years of history. Today, the villagers have been manufacturing the yellow bamboo paper --- "Zeya screen paper" by using bamboo as the main raw material and following the ancient paper-making procedures in a dozen of villages in Zeya Town, Ouhai District. In 2014, the manufacturing process of Zeya screen paper was listed in the national intangible cultural heritage.
[Paper-making]
Siliandui Paper-making Workshops, which mainly consists of the Siliandui paper-making workshops in Shiqiao Village as well as paper-making workshops in Hengyang and Tangzhai Villages of Zeya Town, is an essential part for the culture precinct of Zeya paper mountain. Since the paper-making technique is invented, everything has changed in China, with the ever-changing dynasties. However, all the facilities for making paper by proceeding with over 20 ancient procedures are kept in the Siliandui Paper-making Workshops. The site layout of the water-mills, workshops, etc. as well as the construction of the weirs, creeks, and other diversion facilities, which reflect the mindset and actions of the ancient laboring people to leverage water resources and protect the natural environment, is the crystallization of wisdom of local laboring people. The manufacturing process has specific procedures: raw material preparation, pickling, cooking, pounding & brushing, fishing out, paper pressing, paper separation, paper drying, paper splitting, imprinting, bundling, packaging, etc. In summary, the manufacturing process for the Zeya screen paper is almost identical with related descriptions in the Heavenly Creations by Song Yingxing in the Ming Dynasty. Some procedures are even more ancient than those descriptions in the book. In 2001, the Siliandui Paper-making Workshops was listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit by the State Council.
